We don´t recommend backwash. To clean the fiber balls, we recommend washing it every two weeks either by hand or by washing machine:

Remove fiber balls from the tank and put them in a laundry mesh bag. Use garden hose to flush away the big particles first then put it in washing machine in standard mode.

Only use fresh water to wash the fiber balls, DO NOT add any detergent, bleach or chemicals. If after washing the fiber balls, they still appear to be dirty, it is time to replace them with new one.
